Under the wind-swept trees, I set up my easel. It was the perfect spot back in the shade with a log to sit on and a log to paint. The ocean was beautifully framed by the Cyprus trees. You could feel the power of the wind when looking at the trees. I got a really nice plein air painting of this place. I put it away with many others, brought it with me on other trips to this location and added to it later on on another painting trip. I bring with me old plein paintings when I'm revisiting a painting area in case I'm at that spot again. I have a jump start and may continue painting. I liked this painting format. It has good bones, so I decided to make it a plein air plus, plus, plus. While painting not far from this spot, I came across local ground squirrels. Then took pictures of them and used them to bring more life into the finished scene. This is a good example of a painting with dynamic contrast. The softness of the squirrels fur looked almost feather-like as you went deeper into them and the colors seemed to change. I contrasted this with heavy texturing on the trees and the blustery, sunny ocean. This painting was of a beautiful view in Mendocino, California.
